Built-up roofing consists of alternating layers of bitumen (tar or asphalt) and reinforcing fabric, topped with a layer of gravel. The gravel protects the underlying layers from UV exposure and physical damage, while the multiple bitumen layers provide waterproofing.
Many older San Francisco buildings still have original or replacement tar and gravel roofs. When properly maintained, BUR systems can last 20 to 30 years.
